“On the Meaning of Hiker Trash”
From my Appalachian Trail journal (June 2017):
I am Hiker Trash. I had seen the stickers sold at Trail Days and even a patch or two, not to mention a good portion of hikers declaring their position as Hiker Trash. Yet it wasn't until I found myself showering at the free town pavilion behind the dumpsters in Glasgow Virginia that I too began to wonder if I belonged to this rag tag group. I lathered on the shampoos, conditioners, and, reluctantly, even a bar of soap that had been discarded from past hikers. As I contemplated the cleanliness of the bar of soap I looked down to find clear evidence of Hiker Trash in the free shower: a snickers wrapper, an empty craft beer bottle, two soggy potato chips, and last but not least a chunk of what I made out to be the remnants of a hiker's dirty blonde beard. I had been officially inducted. -
